Full festival creative for Calgary’s first winter music festival

 

Opportunity

For the last five years, BIG Winter Classic has taken over Calgary's Beltline community with four days of music, arts and craft beer. It's a music festival in the dead of winter, and they came to us for a full festival brand.

Approach

Logos and wordmarks

2020 marked the fifth year for Calgary’s BIG Winter Classic music and arts festival. We branded the event using a “tally” to signify five years of BIG.

Festival collateral

We designed a full set of branded festival collateral, including a festival guide full of helpful stuff like schedules, promotions and this event map.

Social templates and event promotion

We created a series of branded album covers to help promote BIG's weekly spotify playlists, a digital campaign executed in the weeks leading to the festival.

Custom typeface - the BIG font

The BIG 2020 brand grew to include a totally custom font. Inspired by and designed to match the 2020 logo, we used this font across all event material, from Spotify artwork to event posters.

Custom illustrations - the BIG empty space

We applied the BIG brand to everything from posters to baseball-t's. The BIG Empty Space poster design was inspired by one of the concert venues, an empty art gallery in Calgary's downtown core.

Solution

HAWK worked with the BIG Winter Classic team to design a totally unique look and feel for their 2020 festival. Bright and gritty with loads of energy, we brought the festival to life through a complete brand, website and a pile of event collateral.
